SLUT WALK

@Jojo Lewis

Written by Emily Stephens (she/her) for The Rising Womxn Zine

TRIGGER WARNING: Rape, sexual assault, abuse

Jojo Lewis (she/her) is a multimedia artist, unapologetically challenging and confronting the western patriarchal society. From mocking the absurdity of patriarchy, with its power status, to highlighting important issues; Jojo's practice reflects her ongoing journey of becoming a feminist activist. Echoing back to the viewer a more direct, louder version of society, Jojo provokes conversations on the oppression of women and minorities. She wishes to empower others, raising the voices of those who may not be heard to powerful and public spaces, such as gallery walls. Jojo also wish to empower and create positive impacts on society through her artwork.

In 2018, police were looking for a man wanted over rape in a local park. This park was notorious for these crimes. ‘Slut Walk’ 2018, was a performance piece in response to this and a protest against rape culture and victim blaming.

THROUGH PLACE AND MIND BY HOLLY HOULTON

@chuttersnap

Written by Emily Stephens (she/her) for The Rising Womxn Zine

Holly Houlton (she/her) is a recent first-class graduate from Coventry University; she is a photographer and writer based in the UK.

Houlton’s work mainly explores the subjects of people and place with a particular interest in the effects they have on one another in relation to experience and time. Using a personal approach, themes of intimacy, relationship and self-reflection are applied to interpret her surrounding environments. Specific attention to detail and light attempts to draw out the perhaps otherwise unseen and stimulate emotive contemplation.

Alongside her visual practice, she is also a passionate writer on photography in both the journalistic and academic form. Houlton is a listed author at Professional Photo Magazine and regularly contributes to and has been published by numerous other established magazines or platforms within the field.

Besides also taking part in exhibitions regarding her photographic practice, Houlton also volunteers at art galleries and festivals which have included: the Eastside Projects contemporary art gallery and the Coventry Biennial of Contemporary Art festival. She has also assisted professional photographers such as; Ian Farrell and Phillip Waterman.

Through Place and Mind responds to Houlton’s relationship with the British countryside. The body of work combines the use of photography, ambient sound and spoken word to express Houlton’s emotional links with the landscape. The work draws upon notions associated with the Romantic movement in its attempt to convey feeling and self-expression as a result of being within a landscape. The use of mixed media creates a timeless space and acts as a metaphor, responding to how landscapes are remembered and felt.

Viewers are taken on a sensory journey, enabling the audience to engage in a meditative experience. This aspires to invoke reflection on how the rural landscape and nature can provide a space for emotive contemplation through an exploration of place. The work aims to encourage viewers to consider their own relationship with land and place.

GIRLS ON FILM BY ELIZABETH COSTLEY

@The Rising Womxn Zine

Written and shot by Elizabeth Costley (she/her) for The Rising Womxn Zine

Forever a girl’s girl, I am privileged to be surrounded by extraordinary women. Never has this been so apparent as during the ongoing pandemic and subsequent lockdown. As my confidants, my pick me up, and my best friends, it is these women who have got me through. My girls have given everything to me and so, through my photography, I give back to them.

This series of portraits captures the intimacy of female friendship in all its golden beauty.

Shot through windows, on trains, on the corner of our street, and during late countryside walks, these photos are brought together by the subjects’ connection to me and mine to them.

These are my girls.
